  • College & Academic Advising
Participants receive college, career, and academic advising periodically throughout the year from all project staff but especially the Academic Coordinator, the Advisor Coordinator, and the College/Career Advisor. During the Academic Year, these individuals make formal appointments periodically with their assigned participants. They also interact with and advise participants on an informal basis during Saturday College, and at planned events. Staff is expected to file three to five contact reports for each assigned student every nine-week period.

    Tutoring
Tutorial service are available to all Upward Bound participants. The Upward Bound tutorial program is held after school for two hours in the Learning Resource Center at Oakland High School. Participants receive assistance as needed by trained and dedicated Tutors. HNU Upward Bound Tutor employees are often recruited from the many Upward Bound alumni throughout the city. The Academic Coordinator closely supervises them. Tutoring assistance is provided for the following subjects: math, social science, natural science, English and Spanish and/or French.

    Saturday College
During the Academic Year, participants also attend Saturday College at the HNU campus. Saturday College is held from 9:00-3:00PM twice a month, from October through May. Meals are provided to participants because of the long day. Participants receive instruction in the high school exit exams; PSAT, SAT, and ACT preparation; and participate in variety of motivational workshops. These workshops feature guest speakers from the community. The topics include the training and reinforcement of academic and life skills, confidence building, and making it through high school. In April and May, participants take part in college tours to allow participants to observe other campuses. and to provide additional encouragement and motivation for participants to pursue a postsecondary education. Monthly city bus tickets are provided to the participants in order to ensure that they have transportation to the HNU campus.

    College Tours
During the Academic Year and Summer Component, the project schedules short college visits to area colleges. Twice every year, one for the participants of the Academic Year component and one for the participants of Summer Component, the project schedules four-day college visits to a particular region of California and outside the state. In the past few years, the project has gone to Southern California to visit colleges there.
